The Panama Railroad, which at the time was administered by the Panama Canal Zone government under U.S. authority, was no exception. It decided to paint all its locomotives in red, white, and blue with stars. Both the high-powered Alco RSC-3 locomotives and the EMD SW-1200 yard switchers received different patriotic designs. The photographs show how the locomotives were painted—an homage that lasted until the early 1980s, when the railroad was transferred to Panamanian control.
The only exception was locomotive 901, which retained its tricolor paint scheme until the end of operations, as it also alluded to the Panamanian flag.
