Frijoles Station

Frijoles railroad station: this station had the name of and old town at the side of the Chagres River where the original route of the Panama railroad went through between 1855 and 1907. The town of Frijoles was key during the early days of the railroad where the trains stopped to reload water and fuel. During the Canal construction days, it was also important with storage sheds and water tanks but when the Gatun Lake was created in 1913, this town ended underwater.
In 1923, the Barro Colorado natural reserve was established managed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The Frijoles railroad station became a key place for all the people that were coming and going to the island for his strategic position near where the small wharf was built. The station was in use until approximately 1986 when STRI changed the boarding place to the Dredging division dock.
