GE 95-Ton Locomotives

GE 95-ton locos: In May 1940, five new locomotives from General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania were built specially for the Panama Railroad. The gauge of the railroad then was 1524 mm. or 60 inches which was different from the American standard, so these engines had unique specifications. These engines were acquired at a cost of $439,000 in 1940 which means about $9.9 million in 2024 dollars. Built with 1000 HP, arrived in Panama in October of 1940, and were used for cars switching jobs, delivering cars to final divisions and costumers, and setting up both cargo trains and passenger trains for the bigger engines to do the transisthmian journeys.
These engines were used until 1962 when these were replaced by SW1200 engines.
