Map of the Isthmus of Panama by George M. Totten (1857)

Detailed topographic map of the Isthmus of Panama prepared under the direction of George M. Totten, Chief Engineer of the Panama Rail Road, published in 1857. It shows the mountainous topography of the isthmus in great detail, including the railroad line, major rivers, Navy Bay (now Limón Bay) on the Atlantic side, and Panama City on the Pacific. Totten was the engineer responsible for completing the transcontinental railroad construction in 1855, facing enormous challenges of terrain, climate, and tropical diseases.
This map represents one of the first complete topographic surveys of the Panamanian isthmus.
